2 Is our air polluted ?

The chief pollutants are nitrogen dioxide, sulphur dioxide, dusts, lead and ozone. All of these pollutants have various origins :

                                                                  The Loire

Nitrogen monoxide and dioxide are due to the hot mixing of the oxigen and the nitrogen.of the air.We find nitrogen monoxide in exhaust pipes. Nitrogen dioxide is very dangerous to the health. When theyreare peaks of pollution. they can cause breathing problems.

The sulphur dioxide comes in decreasing order of. quantities present, from industries then transport, homes, the tertiary and primary sectors. This sulphur dioxide causes " acid rains ". When it's cold, this pollutant causes irritations of the respiratory tracts and the eyes.

Dusts come from exhaust pipes. In winter, the climatic conditions do not eliminate dusts, which are even more of a nuissance for allergic persons.

Ozone comes principally from indusries and transport. There is not much ozone in the atmosphere but it's an aggressive gas to breathing and to eyes.

We find lead chiefly in gas oil. This pollutant is toxic, particularly to the kidneys and the blood.
