The big floods of the river LOIRE

Since the beginning of the century, big floods tooks place. The biggest were these of 1903, 1910, 1936 and 1956. After the municipal archives, in 1910, more than four feet high of water were recorded. The village of TRENTEMOULT organized itself about the "natural catastrophes" which happened one year out of two and sometimes twice inthe same year! The houses have been transformed.

Because of this, big works have been realized in the house:

-Before the floods, the cellar was an inhabited level. But because of the water which flooded it too much often, it was let down and full up with sand. An upper floor was built (old signs of beams prove that this floor didn't always exist). During the works of 1987, that cellar was discovered and partially arranged.

-A flight of steps was built before the entrance on the main street. So when the floods were very important, the small crafts and the boats could accost. All the trade was done with small crafts. The baker and the postman came before every house for distributing bread and mail.

-The small walls we see in the village were not only for delimiting a ground or a property, they were chiefly built to delay the flowing water. In that time, the water didn't flood everything suddenly, it florwed by degrees on several days.

-The hygenic conditions were rather unhealthy : the street were dusty, not cated with macadam sowhen the waterwent amay, all became muddy and the houses kept wet a long time.
