ABSTRACT
The first lock keeper was born in Europe with the first gate on a canal at the end of the XVth century. In the XVIème Century, Léonard de Vinci designed the first lock on a canal. But by the end of the XIXth century, the river network is in competitionwith the rail and road networks. But also modernization has played an important role. Nowadays, the lock keeper mainly sees sailing boats. Now, it is not, the lock keeper who operates the locks, it is the computer. |
