ABSTRACT

During the 17th century, the river Loire was silting up. A solution was found to remedy to this problem : they planted reed. People from the area of Saint-Jean-de-Boiseau who were principally countrymen, used this plant in order to make woven mats named "Courtines". These "Courtines" had insulating properties against dampness and mould and also protected perishable foodstuffs on board trade ships and had other use. This craft industry became an interesting extra payment for the town. Unfortunately after world war two, this craft industry almost disappeared and nowadays they are celebrated not to be forgotten.
