The Bay of Mexico
1.
Nassau gals ain't got no combs
Hey-o, Suziannah,
They comb their heads with whipper backbones,
Round the Bay of Mexico.
Chorus
Round that Bay of Mexico,
Hey-o, Suziannah,
O Mexico is the place that I belong in,
Round the Bay of Mexico.
2.
When I was a young man in my prime,
Hey-o, Suziannah,
I took them gals two at a time,
Round the Bay of Mexico (Chorus)
3.
The reason those pretty girls love me so,
Hey-o, Suziannah,
'Cause I don't talk everything that I know,
Round the Bay of Mexico. (Chorus)
All authorities on the sea shanty agree that American Negroes made a major contribution to the shanty repertoire during the nineteenth century. Scores of shanties are clearly Negro in origin ; others, like this modern Bahaman version of the older Santyana, are negro adaptations.
(Recorded by Alan Lomax in Nassau in 1936).
